Need More Energy?
Do you find yourself slowing down? Maybe you’re feeling sluggish? Do you want to do more but just simply don’t have the energy? Well, have no worries. Boosting your energy levels is an easy task that anyone can do with little effort and the rewards pay off greatly. If you follow these five steps, then it won’t be long before you have the energy you want to do the things you want to do.
Drink Water
Yes, simple as that. Being dehydrated can have devastating consequences on your energy levels. This is especially true for seniors, who already require more water as it is. Drinking at least two liters of water a day can increase your energy levels in no time.
Change Your Diet
If you find yourself eating a lot of processed foods, foods high in sugar, or high in carbohydrates, then chances are you’ll find yourself lacking energy. Contrary to popular belief, simple sugars offer only a slight boost to energy levels, followed by a sudden drain in energy. Adding foods that are packed with quality protein, vitamins, and lean fats will be the best way to get your energy back on track. At Bonaventure Senior Living communities, like independent living, assisted living, and memory care, our Dining Perfected meals and snacks provide a rich diet of nutritious foods. Eating food like chicken, tuna, turkey, nuts, seeds, and eggs can provide you with a boost in energy that will also keep you feeling full for longer and healthier than “junk” food.
Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for an energetic body. While asleep, the body heals itself, stores energy for use the next day, and releases an assortment of hormones that replenish the body. Without sleep, this doesn’t happen. The same can be said for those that don’t get enough sleep, or good quality sleep. Studies suggest that seniors should be sleeping roughly eight hours a day. On top of that, the quality of your sleep has to be good. If you think you may have sleep apnea, talk to your doctor. Sleep apnea can greatly affect your quality of sleep and prevent you from feeling rested when you wake up.
Exercise
Doing simple exercises can increase energy. If the body is moving then complex things are happening. Dopamine, a hormone, is released into the muscles, fueling and soothing them. This in turn provides you with more energy to do more things. The more you exercise, the more energy you’re going to have. This of course excludes strenuous exercise. But, seniors shouldn’t be doing exercise that causes unnecessary strain to the body anyway. If you live in a Bonaventure Senior Living independent living or assisted living community, try our Fitness Perfected exercises. They range in scale and difficulty. From exercises in chairs to full cardio workouts. Whatever the level of intensity you’re comfortable with, we can help you. Our Fitness Perfected exercise classes are designed by a fitness professional and they keep you healthy, active, and full of energy.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking
There’s no problem with having a drink every now and again, but in excess, alcohol can completely deplete your energy. Not only energy, too much alcohol can actually make you depressed. Then a vicious cycle begins. It’s best to keep the drinking to a minimum.
Smoking also has a ton of negative effects on energy levels. Because of diminished lung capacity, less oxygen is sent to the muscles, and that can lead to feelings of being tired. The best bet is to just not smoke.

We hope that you take these tips to heart and get your energy levels up. There’s always something fun to do and having the energy to do it can be vital to your happiness. Be well.
