Spring is a beautiful time that typically allows people to spend more time outdoors. The issue can be, although, what to do? We’ve come up with five great activities for seniors to enjoy this springtime.
Activities
Number 1 –Picnicking
There’s something about spring that just begs for a picnic. Planning for a picnic is a simple task that has great rewards. Start by picking the park. Choose a place that is safe, close by, and has a good assortment of scenery. You’ll want somewhere that has grass and sunlight, but also some shaded areas in case it gets too hot. Next, pick a blanket or sheet that you don’t mind getting a little dirty, but is also comfortable. This will become your base. You can also omit the blanket or sheet if you plan on just using a picnic bench. Planning what you’re going to bring to eat is one of the biggest, and best, parts of planning a picnic. Choosing things that are easy to assemble either at home or at the picnic is best. Sandwiches are a great choice for a picnic. Also having some snack-type foods can also make the picnic a great success. An assortment of delicious cheeses, meats, crackers, and spreads is the perfect complement to a picnic. Make sure to have all necessary utensils. This also goes for drinks. A refreshing, homemade lemonade is perfect on a nice sunny day. Now just invite some family and/or friends and enjoy the food, scenery, and conversations.
Number 2 – Farmer’s Market by Day, Dinner by Night
This time of year is ripe with fresh produce. Gather some loved ones, whether they’re family or friends, and head to your local farmer’s market for some good eats. Think of a dinner idea and buy produce and goods that support that idea. Enjoy the day at the market, sampling numerous things, having a light lunch, and just being in the moment. Then bring all your fresh produce home with your family and/or friends and make a dinner together. Make sure everybody has a task and feels like part of the meal-making process. This will bring a sense of togetherness and make the dinner more enjoyable. Then enjoy the fruits of your hard work.
Number 3 – Fishing
Depending on the senior, and depending on their level of mobility, fishing may be a wonderful thing to do. Fishing can, quite possibly, combine the above two ideas into one, in a different way. Pack a lunch, your fishing gear, your fishing license, and head out! The simplicity, the calmness, and the tranquility of fishing is something that a lot of seniors enjoy. Eat a lunch, similar to a picnic, and, if you catch any fish, bring them home and serve them up for dinner. What a day that would be to spend with your loved ones.
Number 4 – Garden
Spring is the perfect time to get your flowers or fruits and vegetable seeds in the ground. Gardening has been known to not only calm those that garden, but also boost happiness and bring about a sense of completion. Deciding what to plant may just be the hardest part of gardening. Try mixing it up and planting both something pretty to look at, like flowers, and also something you can eat, like tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are always welcomed by hungry mouths. Cherry tomatoes are a wonderful, healthy snack that is enjoyed by many.
Number 5 – Go for a Walk
Walking is really good for you. Walking is a form of exercise, despite the fact that it’s typically one of the easiest to do. Going for a walk is only limited by your imagination. A walk can be as simple as a quick stroll around the block or a long hike to a hidden waterfall. Whatever type of walk you do, make sure that the area is appropriate for the abilities of the people that are walking. Bring lots of water, some snacks, and a good pair of shoes.
