Senior Skin Care Tips

The sun is out and shining. Taking care of your skin can be a very important thing to do as we age. Over time, skin will lose its elasticity, vibrancy, and strength. However, there are things you can do to protect and nurture your skin.

Clean Skin

The first steps to better, healthy skin is to make sure that it’s properly clean. You want to find a skin cleaning product that removes the dirt, but doesn’t remove the moisture. Dirt is not good for skin, however, the natural oils in your skin are very good. Not only do they keep your clean minimally protected from the elements, they also provide a sort of natural sheen that keeps it looking vibrant. A lot of people believe that they must remove their natural oil. This can ultimately lead to dry, unprotected, and dull-looking skin.

Protect Skin

Protecting your skin from the elements is very important. It’s even more essential as a senior. The sun can not only burn unprotected skin, but prolonged exposure has been shown to cause skin cancer. The best defense? Sunscreen. It has been shown to not only prevent sunburns and skin cancer by protecting the skin from the sun, but it’s also been shown to halt skin aging by 24%. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a 30SPF rating or higher. That will ensure that you’re properly protected from the sun’s harsh rays.

Apply sunscreen throughout the day if you’re going to be outside in the sun for extended amounts of time, as it does wear off, especially if you’re going into water. Make sure to lather the sunscreen on your entire body, as the sun can penetrate through clothing, albeit not as powerfully. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Nourish Skin

Clean and protected skin is all that most people need, but seniors should take it a step further by nourishing their skin. Basically, this means using products that replace or add moisture, vitamins, minerals, or other beneficial things back into their skin to give it a vibrancy, elasticity, and smooth-feel.

There are a lot of lotion types out there. Don’t be overwhelmed though. There are certain things seniors should look for when purchasing a skincare lotion. The main thing to look for is a humectant. A humectant is something that draws moisture into the skin, giving it nourishment. The second thing is a sealer. This keeps the moisture in and prevents it from evaporating. Both of these two things are quite important in a lotion. If you can find alcohol-free lotion with both a humectant and a sealer, then get that. Alcohol makes the lotion evaporate at a quicker pace, so you’ll use more product. Alcohol also dries skin and can irritate people that are sensitive.

Also, try and look for something that’s fragrance-free. Fragrance has been shown to be among the most common irritant in skincare products. It may smell good, but it’s not really helping give you the glow, protection, and nourishment you deserve.

Conclusion

Doing everything you can to keep looking your best will ensure that you continue to have the glowing, healthy skin you deserve. Enjoy the sun, but be careful how much exposure you get, especially if you aren’t protected. Be well.
